Sara keskendub videokaamera abil Moostes ühele konkreetsele paigale.
Derek kaardistab erinevate mikrofonide ja minidiski abil küla
ja selle ümbruskonna helid. Kogutud materjali esitavad nad koos
avalikkuse ees improviseerides, seda mõnes akustiliselt põnevas
paigas, mille nad Moostes leiavad
Sara Kolster on töötanud audio-visuaalsete projektide kallal erinevates
maades (Kanada, Läti, Holland) viimased kolm aastat. Netiprojektide, graafilise
ja veebidisaini kõrval on tema tähelepanu nihkunud video ja filmi
suunas.
Viimased viis aastat on Derek Holzer on töötanud raadio- ja helikunstnikuna
Ameerika Ühendriikides, Hollandis ja Ida- Euroopas. Viimasel paaril aastal
on ta intensiivselt tegelenud välisalvestamisega, teatud paikade ja objektide
sageduste jäädvustamisega. Enne murrangulist reisi Brasiiliasse otsis
ta nö. puhtaid eraldiseisvaid helisid. Retk vihmametsadesse, selle tuhandete üksteisest
eristamatute helidega, tekitas teadlikkuse helide seostest ja sünkroonsusest
ning vajaduse läheneda terviklikult helidekeskkonna salvestamisse. Taolise “ilmutusega” hakkas
ta helikunstnikuna töötama “Isolatsioon´i” teemal
ja otsima viisie kuidas lülitada välja oma selekteeriv meel ja koguda
helisid, mis tõesti kirjeldavad konkreetset paika.
================================
With the means of video Sara plans to concentrate into one specific location
in Mooste. Derek equipped with several mikes and MD recorder will map sounds
of
the surrounding. Materials gathered will be performed and improvised to public
in some acoustically interesting place they will find in Mooste.
Over tast 3 years Sara Kolster has been worked on audio- visual
projects in different countries such as Latvia, Canada and Netherlands. Besides
net-based projects, graphical and web design her focus has been shifted in the
direction of video and film
Sara: “When i think of isolation, i refer to
its meaning as
the
act of isolation something, setting it apart from others. I do not refer to the
negative feeling of being disliked or being alone, but think of isolation as
a way of being released from a certain context or the bigger picture. The isolation
of details from their environment will give them a different meaning. Each detail
or object, most of the time unnoticable, has its own story. Seeing them apart
from eachother, within another environment, or even
its own, but represented by another medium, influences the perception of the
location, context and the isolated elements themselves. In psychiatry isolation
has a similar meaning. It represents a defense mechanism in which memory of an
unacceptable act or impulse is separated
from the emotion
originally associated with it.
For the last 5 years Derek Holzer has been working as a radio and sound artist
in the US, Holland and Eastern Europe, and for the last couple of years he has
been very interested in collecting field recordings and capturing the resonances
of certain locations and objects.
Derek: “The following summer, I traveled in
Brasil with the hopes of making similar recordings. Up to this point, I was used
to extracting
very small, almost unnoticed sounds from somewhat desolate settings. In
Brasil, however, the process of isolating one sound from another was almost impossible.
For every bird, insect or monkey I hoped to capture with my microphone, there
was an even larger number of dogs, chickens, diesel boat engines, chainsaws,
motorcycles, car stereos, low-flying airplanes and other sonic "pollution" to
deal with.
This caused me [and several others!] a lot of agony until I realized that I was
not dealing with the situation holistically. Instead of trying to cut off and
isolate parts of the world from other parts, I should be more conscious of the
connections and synchronicities that exist. With
this "revelation" in mind, I started to think about the theme of "Isolation" in
relation to my work as a sound artist, and
of how I could find a system to turn off my discriminating mind and collect sounds
which truly represent a specific location. The result follows...
