COOKING BATTERIES 18.08.2010 (daily 11am- 6pm)

CRACLE' OFF THE 'BOX 19.-21.08.2010 (daily 11am- 6pm)

participation fee in both workshops: 500 eek (or 32 eur)

COOKING BATTERIES (Workshop, table-installation)

Keywords: basic, creative, explorative, inspiring, physical, playful, not edible

The cheese- or grape- battery might not be as useful as a button cell, but they do get it down to around the same size, sufficient to power a LED, LCD display, little radio, or sound toy and may inspire you to experiment artistically-green and get some food for thoughts and energy for ideas;) In this 1-day session we will be creating recipes from foodstuffs as well as earth and other unexpected ingredients to 'cook' batteries; Involving various kind of food and drinks to determine how much current and voltage is possible to get with each recipe tried; Wiring batteries in series to increase voltage and in parallel to get more capacity; You might like to design your own (battery-)dish for a table-installation as an artistic outcome. (btw, all food is a battery, but battery isn't food. Do not eat those dishes.) So.. let's discover energy in things around us, enjoy, (miss)use, be inspired, get ideas and know hows.

All quires and creative are welcome!

Btw, if you like to join, please remember to bring:

-Different foodstuffs (more-better): Boiled(!) and raw potatoes and any other (non-) and boiled vegetables, which have HARD tissues. As well as fruits - grapes, bananas, strawberry, apples and other food on your choice to design your batteries from. Coca-cola, cheese and wine are good electrolytes too;). You might also use some discarded food, not to waste a fresh one. -Portable radio, a digital clock, sound-toy or whatever small electronic device you choose to power and are not afraid to open. It is best to look for items that run at 3 volts or less and less than 0.5 mA = 500 mA. -LEDs, galvanized nails/screw or any zinc-pieces. (If you have those)

CRACKLE OFF THE BOX (Workshop-performance)

Keywords: creative, explorative, physical, old alternative, romantic, can get loud..

How to pull out a wide musical noise-scape from body, food, fruits, vegetables, plants, earth.. while playing (with) them. During the workshop we will build a simple audio amplifier and adapt it's circuit that it turns into a kind of' CrackleBox/Kraakdoos - simple but an expressive touch- and pressure-sensitive instrument. The human body and any conductive matters become a part of an electric circuit (or the other way around) and determine the range of sounds possible. Different people, different materials, different combinations of 'touchpoints' and different inputs will generate different results. We'll experiment, extend and expand the circuit with food, plants, our bodies to 'crackle' off the 'box'.

Day 1-3: 1) Building the amplifier, exploring and personalizing it, playing around with different combinations of 'touchpoints', trying out different materials. 2) Extending the circuit further, experimenting, involving unexpected devises and materials into the circuit, trying to find some interesting combinations between 'touchpoints', conductive materials and input sources to get some present sonic results. Wiring around, creating an 'interface' inside or/and outside. 3) Summarizing. Testing. A choir of weird crackling by ear. Collaboratively, spatially and interconnectivly.

Bring along: -Fruits, vegetables, plants (soft tissues are better) and any conductive materials to play with (can be discarded or found outside) -Few 9V batteries (rechargeable would be the best) -Soldering iron, Row 8 Ohm speaker, Piezos, crocodiles etc (If you have)

Sound-related and/or noise friendly everyone is welcome. It would be great if you enjoy playing with materials and people. No previous experience in electronics necessary. (Any soldering experience appreciated though)

BIO

Natalia Borissova is Munich-based Russian (Moscow) media artist/organizer. Since 1995 she has been experimentally working with visual media while living in Moscow, Berlin, Stuttgart, Buffalo and Munich. Gradually her main artistic focus has shifted from visual- to sound and DIY. Since 2006 she is running aa-vv.org - migrating lab for everyone who has a joy of working with technology in diy, experimental, critical and unconventional way. She is trying to keep both change and continuity in setting up hands-on creative workshops, as well as instigating those self-(de)constructivist, experiment-based, temporal norms-forms abandoning situations. Borissova was a visiting lecturer at State University Buffalo NY (SUNY), had a scholarship in Munich as well as a residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart) and Poellau (Austria).
