What is PostsovkhoZ? PostsovkhoZ started in 2001 as a creative open forum to question the social, cultural and economic issues facing rural village life in post-soviet Estonia. Since then PostsovkhoZ has developed into a multi-purpose, cross-discipline artistic and social event of creative interventions in a context-specific location. PostsovkhoZ encourages both the exchange of ideas and the realization of short term artistic projects within a 16 day event. PostsovkhoZ is hosted by MoKS, an non-profit artist-run cultural organization dedicated to local and international cooperation in the fields of arts, social and environmental research in Mooste, Estonia (pop. 520 people, 48km SE of Tartu). Call for participation: PostsovkhoZ operates on the principle of open models of artistic work, realized in a location specific environment. This is a call for projects and/or workshops to be carried out during the frame of the event. Projects are open to any medium and method (visual, sculptural, performed, written, researched) with an emphasis on collaborative efforts. Projects may consider being done with other artists, in the interest of the local people or in relation to local buildings or natural environment. Workshops can concentrate on education with local youth, group activities with other artists etc. Proposals will be reviewed by the MoKS members and selected soon after the deadline. To apply: - You must send a brief but clear description of your project proposal (with material costs or any human assistance you may need). - Give a time frame for your participation, anywhere from 5-16 days is acceptable. - Also include a short CV and some examples of past work (web, photo, video, written documentation). - Proposals can be sent electronically or by post (please ask before sending large files). PostsovkhoZ is hosted by MoKS, an non-profit artist-run cultural organization dedicated to local and international cooperation in the fields of arts, social and environmental research in Mooste, Estonia (pop. 520 people, 48km SE of Tartu). This years theme... inimloomaed / human zoo " All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." - George Orwell "Animal Farm" keywords: captivity, borders, observation, surveillance, domestication, animal behavior, instinct, security, connectedness, artificial and natural environments This year MoKS will take a rather ironic approach to its summer art symposium with the theme "Human Zoo". As for the local residents it sometimes seems as if the village becomes "occupied" by artists in early August during PostsovkhoZ when foreigners from around the world come to explore and create in Mooste. And for visiting artists, there is the unique feeling of being "set free" to wander and work among the people and places of the village. The symposium arrangement of the observer and the observed is a subjective one depending on the position you view it from. In the cases of active collaborations between inhabitants and visitors, the borders appear then often dissolve through whatever communication processes may be used. Yet, in many cases beyond the quiet village life, barriers for people are also constructed by physical, psychological and technological means. Our perception of these conditions is often guided by our awareness of their existence. The concept of a human zoo is not a new one. Many cases of putting humans on display for scientific, entertainment and often cruel purposes have been documented throughout colonial times. With the rise of industrialization, people and their environments were viewed and managed as if they were living machines existing beyond the natural realm. In the late 1960's the British zoologist, artist and filmmaker Desmond Morris popularized the concept through his controversial books, The Naked Ape and The Human Zoo. In these works Morris attempts to examine human behavior from a zoological perspective. In more recent times, the London Zoo, where Morris worked as a Curator of Mammals for many years, hosted an exhibition entitled The Human Zoo. For 4 days a group of homo sapiens were put on display along side the other animal inhabitants of the zoo. Beyond the literal interpretation of a Human Zoo, we may look at the broader impacts of life beyond the post-modern age. The condition of being "wired" in in a time of expanding communications media also brings up issues of surveillance and greater loss of individual autonomy. Wherever you're "connected" you may also be "tracked". Movements and positions of people can be easily traced and recorded through mobile phones, IP addresses, bank and credit card transactions as well as other details on type of activity one may be engaging in (what you buy, where you surf and with what equipment etc..). The notion of being watched at any time and in any place introduces a new level of voyeuristic reality well beyond the now common media spectacles of Big Brother and other so called "reality TV" programs. One may view this form of voyeuristic television reality as a as a type of "conditioning" for the deeper relationship between our everyday routines and the larger control systems that surround us, blurring the boundaries between observer and observed ever further. During PostsovkhoZ6 we seek to challenge artists, musicians, social researchers and other participants in interpreting these ideas through creative interventions and artistic collaborations. What to expect... The 16 day event, taking experiences from previous PostsovkhoZ events, attempts to instigate cooperative activities within local community and between a temporary international artistic community. This event has always encouraged cooperation of Estonian artists, the local community and artists from abroad. Involvement will become real through the planned places of activities (village “central” square, farm buildings, open spaces) and projects (joint workshops with children or village theatre). PostsovkhoZ challenges exclusionary culture through inclusive participation and challenges the role of the artist and their means and methods of creative expression. Within the event we hold presentations and open discussion forums, a film evening, a 2 week-long work and exchange period with public exhibitions and performance events scheduled for the weekends. Nendes raamatutes proovib Morris vaadelda inimkäitumist zooloogi vaatepunktist. Vähe hilisemal ajal, korraldas Londoni loomaaed, kus Morris kuraatorina töötas, näituse pealkirjaga The Human Zoo. Neljaks päevaks pandi loomaaia külastajaile vaatamiseks välja ka grupp homo sapiens ´i esindajaid. Lisaks pealkirja Inimloomaaed otsesele tõlgendamisele võib teemapüstitust vaadelda laiemalt, käsitledes elu üldse postmodernsel ajastul. Olukord, kus inimesed on pidevalt ühendatud suurde kommunikatsioonisüsteemi, toob päevakorda küsimused seirest ja isikliku autonoomia kadumisest.
