Anna Marie Rockwell  was born in Greenbrae, California, in 1980. She received her B.F.A. in painting from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland Oregon in 2007 and her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in new genres in 2012. Aside from her degree programs she has also studied art in Spain, France and Mexico as well as participated in several international artist residencies. This is her second time as artist in residence here at MoKS, Center for Art and Social Practice.

Rockwell’s current body of work questions notions of ‘wholesomeness’ and how its presumed integrity and earnestness has made it seem akin to ‘goodness’ yet for this very reason it makes a perfect hiding place for rather repressive ideologies. Her work investigates this deceptive quality produced when its shadow side is overlooked. Rockwell also draws from the more archetypal theme of the expulsion from paradise or the Garden of Eden and other lost or mal-practiced utopias. Her work incorporates photography, painting, and other mixed media.
