Crossing Contexts, a lab for artistic research

Luisa Greenfield and Camilla Graff Junior are artist researchers who met by becoming coordinators for the migratory Nordic Summer University Artistic Research study circle where they also develop their own work.

Their collaboration as coordinators is a process that generates material for their art practices and they consider the study circle as a whole to be a form of collective education as art practice. Current biannual conference cycle (2012‐2015) operates under the thematic title, Crossing Contexts: Interventions Through Artistic Research. By intervention, they mean actions, which are designed to change the course of events or a process because of the way it can change people's perceptions and affect their actions. This might occur in the world at large, in the methods or process of doing research, or within the subject of the research itself.

Nordic Summer University Artistic Research study circle provides a space for theoretical and aesthetic experimentation; they aim to develop methodological insights that could be incorporated into ongoing research and artistic works.

Study circle sessions are structured as a creative lab or workshop, international participants variously activate the space by forming on the spot collaborations with participants coming from all areas of the arts, philosophy and aesthetic theory, and also with artists/scholars local to the conference location, which moves between different Nordic or Baltic cities.

In future they aspire to integrate more artists and researchers from the Baltic’s in the circle and intend to hold their Winter Symposium 2015 in Tallinn and Summer Symposium 2015 in Lithuania.
