What is Real?

Workshop at MoKS.

The workshop will consist of two separate, three-day periods, July 15-17 and 23-25, and is oriented towards working artists with children. Interested participants can join one or both sessions.

The workshops are coordinated by artists Karolina Kucia, Tero Nauha, Evelyn Grzinich and John Grzinich and may consist of games, discussions, exercises, walks, sharing, cooking, free play and other activities related to the theme “What is Real?”. Participants are encouraged to share their own ideas and interests.

The method of the workshop is based on notion that all thinking is equal, that is to say, all understanding of what is real, are considered equally valid. Therefore we will plan these total of six days in the way, where both children, youth adults will have equal attention on their presentation or ideas of what is real. When we think of what is real, we tend to create hierarchies of knowledge. Some points of views or thoughts are supposedly correlating more with the real than others — some thoughts are more ‘realistic’ than others. In pedagogy we often encounter practices of discipline or control, so that a child, youth or adult would get a better correlation what is real, and to discard the more ‘unrealistic’ thoughts. Then, in our proposal, what happens is that we may either consider everything equally as real, or that everything is as-if-real. This workshop is open to children, youth and adults who have interest to these questions, and are ready to share, collaborate and experiment.

June 1 — July 31, 2009

Tero and Karolina came to MoKS to prepare a book and work on the documentation of their collaborative artistic project 'KUKIA'.
