Art and provocation: in discussion with Piotr Armianovski
Moderated by John Grzinich
How does an individual artist react and respond to the large scale
social and political shifts of our time? And in doing so, can one
preserve their integrity and be creative at the same time? Such
questions have perpetually faced Piotr Armianovski as he navigates
between the roles of artist, activist and documentarian of events at the
front lines of political change in his native Ukraine. Not only will we
hear his stories but also challenge ourselves to consider the
implications of artistic action in the face of propaganda, populism and
the powers behind broader historical change.
Piotr Armianovski is a Ukrainian performer and director. He started his
artistic activity through theater in Donetsk. Later he performed and
studied in Kyiv, Lviv, and Moscow including the “School of Performance”
by Janusz Baldyga (Lviv, 2010) and the “Artist is present” by Marina
Abramovic (Moscow, 2011). His latest interests are in working with
documentary, text and video.
