Art and provocation: in discussion with Piotr Armianovski 
Moderated by John Grzinich 
How does an individual artist react and respond to the large scale 
social and political shifts of our time? And in doing so, can one 
preserve their integrity and be creative at the same time? Such 
questions have perpetually faced Piotr Armianovski as he navigates 
between the roles of artist, activist and documentarian of events at the 
front lines of political change in his native Ukraine. Not only will we 
hear his stories but also challenge ourselves to consider the 
implications of artistic action in the face of propaganda, populism and 
the powers behind broader historical change. 
Piotr Armianovski is a Ukrainian performer and director. He started his 
artistic activity through theater in Donetsk. Later he performed and 
studied in Kyiv, Lviv, and Moscow including the “School of Performance” 
by Janusz Baldyga (Lviv, 2010) and the “Artist is present” by Marina 
Abramovic (Moscow, 2011). His latest interests are in working with 
documentary, text and video.
