Female Filmmakers Network

Female Filmmaker Network project

The Female Filmmaker Network is a project supported by the Nordic-Baltic mobility programme “Culture” and implemented by four partners coming from the Baltic and Nordic countries - Rucka Art Foundation, an independent art institution based in Cesis, Latvia, MoKS, a non-profit artist-run project space in Estonia situated in the rural community of Mooste, Film på Gotland, one of Sweden's nineteen regional film centers, and Bergmanscenter, a cultural center that focuses on the life and artistic achievements of legendary Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman.

The main objective of the network is to bring together female filmmakers - directors, producers, cinematographers, sound recordists, editors and others from Estonia, Latvia and Sweden to give them the opportunity to share the challenges related to working in the film industry, listen to empowering stories and experiences and develop new projects. The contacts made through the Female Filmmakers network will result in common projects and Baltic-Nordic co-oproductions of films relevant for modern female.

Expectations towards participants

The project partners are looking forward to receive motivated applications from both experienced and upcoming filmmakers from Estonia, Latvia and Sweden who are interested in working on creating joint Baltic-Nordic film projects or participating in their implementation.

The programme

The project foresees creating network through an open call for participants (4 from each country) organised in January 2020 followed by a series of 3 workshops held in each country. The purpose of the workshops will be two-fold - firstly, to help Baltic and Nordic female filmmakers to make contacts with their counterparts in other countries that would be beneficial for future projects and potential co-productions, and secondly, to work on different issues across the disciplines within the film industry.

The first 4-day workshop will take place at Rucka Artist Residency, in Cesis, Latvia on 31 May - 3 June. It will be dedicated to the group introduction and challenges of being a female in the film industry. The second workshop will take place on 19-22 July 2020, at MoKS artist space in Mooste, Estonia and will concentrate on managing expectations between different professions within the film industry. The third workshop will be held on 27-30 September 2020 in Gotland, Sweden and will concentrate on networking and co-production issues with special emphasis on addressing the topics that are relevant and interesting for modern female.
