Residency artists
Simon Whetham

Simon Whetham is a professional Sound Artist. For him this term has been considered and refined over a decade of practice and experience of working creatively with sonic phenomena and perception.
Projects include, and often combine, sonic investigation of place and site, historical reference, collaboration, workshops, performance and installation. Exchange and engagement are integral to his working practice.
These projects have been commissioned and hosted in countries South Korea, Iceland, Estonia, Chile, Australia, Colombia, Norway and Japan.
In a world where even artists seem to crave fame and fortune, Simon is content to live as a travelling artist, directly engaging with smaller communities and audiences, often with an aim to reach those who are normally excluded from art and culture.

During the residency with MoKS Simon will assist Hany.P in developing Monsoon (Vol.2), collaborating with her on sound and stage/set design, as well as exploring methods of sound generation for live performance.

After the sizable and successful Active Crossover residency of 2015, Simon has returned to collaborate with John Grzinich on a sound work for the OMEGA 3 exhibition. The work is entitled 'Efflorescence'. The title refers both to the blossoming of an event from a seed, but also to a chemical process of incrustation which occurs in metallic substances.

The proposal is to take currently unused but intrinsic objects from the seed factory (up to 6) that would be transplanted to the exhibition area and placed at some distance from each other in corners of the room and between (but not interfering with) other works.

These objects would each have a transducer speaker attached and would resonate with a sound piece that would be composed from live performative actions that were documented during the international residency project 'Active Crossover: Mooste', which was hosted by MoKS.

The piece 'Efflorescence' for Omega 3 is a further part of the Active Crossover legacy, fed by the momentum generated during the original residency in 2015.
