Terje Toomistu is an Estonian documentary filmmaker and anthropologist. Her work often draws from various cross-cultural processes, queer realities and cultural memory. She holds double MA degrees (cum laude) in Ethnology and in Communication Studies from University of Tartu, where she is currently pursuing a PhD degree in anthropology. She has been a visiting fellow at University of Sanata Dharma in Indonesia, UC Berkeley in U.S. (Fulbright scholarship) and University of Amsterdam in Netherlands. Her main areas of research are Indonesian gender and sexuality and the Soviet non-conformist youth. Her filmography includes Wariazone (2011), Archeology of Ayahuasca (2016) and her most recent award-winning documentary Soviet Hippies (2017).
